They are great for putting your finger on the job market pulse and to get an idea of what is out there. Covey’s metaphorical bank account holds trust as its currency. He uses the idea to help people understand how trust is built: not on faith, but on proof. The emotional bank account works just like a traditional bank account. You make deposits by behaving in ways that build trust. Each positive interaction between two people, whether they’re partners, friends, family, or coworkers, adds to the account balance. You promise to come early to finish the project, and you do. Deposit. You promise to deliver the report by close of business Thursday, and you do. Deposit.  You promise to take off early to be there for the soccer game, and you do. Deposit. You make sure the coffee pot is turned off before you leave for the evening. Small deposit. You cover for a coworker while her dad’s in the hospital. Big deposit. Loyalty, generosity, reliability, empathy, kindness â€" they are all ways to contribute to your accounts. And you have multiple accounts. Hundreds of them, since every relationship you have has its own individual account.   It doesn’t matter how many times you cover for Mary; John doesn’t see that deposit in your account with him. Actions that take away trust are withdrawals from the account. You’re late for work again Tuesday. Withdrawal. You forget an important deadline or that today was the big presentation your spouse has been working on for weeks. Withdrawal. When you snap at your kids, disappoint your boss, let down a friend, blow off a commitment, or break a promise, you are withdrawing from your account. Once you understand this system, lots of relationship issues make sense. The day your boss decided to counsel you, even though you were just 10 minutes late? Is ten minutes worth a serious discussion? Only if you’re overdrawn on your emotional bank account. Your spouse doesn’t trust you to remember the smallest thing she asks you to do?   Check your balance; you’re probably overdrawn. The good news is that your accounts are always open for deposit. Arrive early. Stay late. Remember small things. Volunteer to help before being asked. Pick up your mess. Ask if he needs a hug. Your account will have a generous balance, and you needn’t worry that the next time you act, well, human, you won’t be forgiven. Covey wrote that the way you treat one person tells him (and any others who see it or hear about it) how you’ll treat others.   Act with integrity and you build trust with everyone who sees your actions.   Be loyal to someone who is absent (no gossip, meanness, or backstabbing) and people will trust you when their backs are turned. Integrity has a multiplier effect. One word of caution about deposits.   You can only deposit acts; words are not valid currency.   “I promise it won’t happen again” is not a deposit. Only your actions can build up your balance. Good intentions and pretty promises don’t matter. Covey was fond of saying “you can’t talk yourself out of something you behaved yourself into.” When you withdraw from your account, apologize sincerely. “I was wrong to do that.” “That was unkind of me.” Think of apologies as responsible account management.   You are signaling that you understand you’ve made a withdrawal (and how big it was.) That implies that you’re keeping careful track of your balance, and that the relationship matters to you. If apologizing comes hard for you, learn get over it.   You can’t expect to live on credit forever; eventually no one will do business with you at all.

Why Unvites are OK and When to Use Them - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career There are times when you realize you need to pull back. When you realize you might have gone too far. Im talking about LinkedIn invites. And that you might want to Withdraw one, two or a few of them every so often. And, there is nothing wrong with this. Reality Check 1: Have you ever sent out a bunch of LinkedIn invitations? I mean … Who hasn’t? Maybe you just joined a new company or volunteered on a board. Maybe you wanted to reach out to a group in your industry Then realized … some of the people you invited havent accepted. Now what? Not to worry. This is not a big deal and its not a career ender. As far as I can tell you are the only one that can tell if you have outstanding invitations in LinkedIn.. And, its easy to check to see if you have any. And, equally important it’s just as easy to make an adjustment. Ill show you the steps below. Note: I say adjustment here because sending out LinkedIn invites is not a wrong or a bad thing.  Sometimes you just realize you may want to pull a few of them back. Why Unvite Someone? Simple, people change. Jobs change. Life changes. We move on. People move on. We deal with it. Unviting someone is OK Also, it might feel just a little bit empowering to think to yourself … Bam! That Just Happened!! Invite Revoked!!! Making the Unvite Happen On LinkedIn they make it possible to Withdraw invitations you have sent. As you can gather …   I call these The Unvite. Reality Check 2: I don’t think we, the user, are penalized for having multiple invitations out there. However, I am pretty there is some level of tracking that shows how many unaccepted invitations you have sitting out there. This might change the way recommendations are made and it might also change the way In a perfect world … the would have a weighing factor for how many you have being sent to you that you havent responded to … yet. Why Unvite Someone? Not to belabor the point, but there are a lot of reasons why you might want to withdraw a LinkedIn request. Sometimes you just dont want to connect with them anymore. Other times you realize you want to change the note you sent. (Hint: Always send a personalized note) The Good News The Fix is In … and its really easy. Its very easy to check for outstanding invitations and to withdraw them if you so choose. How to Unvite Someone in Six Easy Steps: Go to Messages (hover over the envelope icon on the top right side of the LinkedIn Menu bar and click) Click on Sent (In the window that pops up select Sent) Search for Join my network on LinkedIn Note: this can be a multi-page search. It may take a few minutes. Click on the one(s) you want to Withdraw Select Withdraw Repeat as necessary Keeping it Tight As a general rule its a good idea to prune you LinkedIn invites periodically. At least once every three months. While you are at it take a look around your profile too. Make sure you current job role, title and responsibilities are accurate. Annual reviews, that time of the year when you get rated and, hopefully, a pay raise. Generally, that means a chance to evaluate how were doing in our managers opinion, and what we could be doing in order to take the next step up. For some of us, annual reviews are also the opportunity to pose the question we all quietly think about asking: do you think its time for a pay raise? Its all very well and good to have high hopes, but in the heat of a meeting, such a rational question might slip out in a format thats Not Quite Right. Here are the three key steps to nailing that tricky conversation. 1. Do your research One cant stress the importance of this enough. The first step will be getting to know your companys pay practices and policies, and when pay upgrades are offered. This will give you a set period in which you can begin to gather the results of your work and/or manage greater responsibility, to demonstrate why youre worth those extra dollars. Next, youll have to take a look at what your industrys currently offering. Sites like Glassdoor and Payscale provide useful indications of what the market rate is for your role, and how this is likely to increase, meaning youll go into your review armed with evidence of what you should receive. If youre lucky enough to work for a company thats paying above the grade, this evidence might not work in your favor. What have you achieved thats pushed the company closer towards its goals? Have you done enough to get a pay raise Tweet This 2. Be straightforward with your manager No ifs or buts. If youre only airing your achievements and your vague inclination that your current role isnt enough, you wont be providing your manager with any practicable way to address your concerns; and if anything, thats only going to ripen into confusion. Theres no need to bring emotions into the fray here, either. If a pay raise is deserved, its likely that both of you have sensed it coming for some time. Meaning, theres no need for flattery or uncertain testing of the waters or, God forbid, guilt-tripping. Its best if you come with a specific figure in mind too, meaning that your manager can go away with a clear understanding of exactly what you want. Any ambiguity will leave it in your manager and corporations hands to debate and if the figure isnt one youre pleased with, what should be a straightforward process could turn into months of negotiation and debate. No Thanks. 3. Substantiate your claims The words are out. Your manager is no longer required to read minds. The question is: are they mentally reviewing all your accomplishments in a positive light? Again, if this is something thats been a while coming, chances are good that they are. But its your responsibility to bring them to the forefront of your managers mind nonetheless, as proof of why youre worth the figure youre quoting. If youve followed up on your figuring out when pay raises are offered (as mentioned in step one), you should have a veritable plethora of achievements to highlight your value to the company. While its important to tie these accomplishments back to the key performance indicators youve been hired for and how youve met them, its even better if you can show youve gone above and beyond by illustrating the value youve added for the company. For example, if youve been hired to manage a transition project, have you not only effected it but also managed to cut down on company costs during this period? Keep in mind that while these accomplishments may be as clear as day in your mind, your managers often juggling a dozen different tasks and priorities and wont be able to quite recall. Thats why its best to be able to provide evidence of what youve accomplished for the business, whether this can be quantitatively or qualitatively analyzed. Try and put yourself in the CEO yes, the CEO, not your managers shoes. What results would look impressive and what numbers do you have to substantiate them? Have you been handed additional responsibility thatll aid the company, which may not previously have been expected? Conclusion What have you achieved thats pushed the company closer towards its goals? Is there a record of your involvement and has your manager seen it? If not, they may ask for a copy, but dont send this along until invited; no-one likes an unnecessary bit of showboating. Of course, asking for a pay raise is still scary, no matter your situation. And its possible albeit unfortunate that in some instances, your company wont be able to offer you the salary youre looking for.
